Final Fantasy XI will require Xbox 360 hard drive

Want to play in Vana'diel? You'll need the 'premium' package.

Square Enix has announced that the Xbox 360 version of Final Fantasy XI will require the Xbox hard drive to function.

Microsoft is releasing two versions of its Xbox 360 console. The Core version features a wired controller and the base console, while the Premium version includes a hard drive, wireless controller and other extras. Square Enix's announcement means that the Premium Xbox, which will retail for $399 US when the console is launched, will be required. The Core system comes in at $299 US.

Microsoft urges game developers not to make games that revolve around, or require, the hard drive functionality, but instead use the drive to add additional features, or to enhance gameplay. Final Fantasy XI requires a hard drive attachment to be played on the PlayStation 2, so it makes sense that the Xbox 360 version would need the drive. Still, this drives up the price for gamers who want to take advantage of the improved graphics and features of FFXI on the new console.

Microsoft's Xbox 360 will be released this holiday season, and Square says that Final Fantasy XI will be released for the system shortly afterwards (presumably before Christmas.) The PC and PS2 versions are currently available.
