Nintendo and Square Enix team up for mobile Pokemon

Final Fantasy developer will publish cell phone content in Japan

April 24, 2006

Square Enix announced today that it's teamed up with Nintendo's Pokemon company to develop Pokémon content for mobile phones in Japan.

Nintendo and Square Enix have been getting along recently: retro Final Fantasy titles are being re-released on Nintendo's portable systems, and new Nintendo DS games are on the way. But it's unlikely that many people expected that Square Enix would soon be working on Pokémon. Square Enix has been quite successful in the mobile phone market in Japan, and it's no suprise that Nintendo would go to the company for help with cell phone gaming.

With North America's reluctance to adopt mobile phone gaming in any serious way, and with the state-side passing of the Pokémon fad, it's unlikely that these games will see release on this side of the Pacific.
