More Final Fantasy XI Chocobo Breeding Details
Five breeds of Chocobo will emerge this July
June 20, 2006
Square Enix has updated its Final Fantasy XI Web site with some new information on chocobo breeding. Chocobos, like in nearly every Final Fantasy game, have been in FFXI since the beginning. The new chocobo-breeding feature, however, will be introduced in July with a version update of the game.
The FFXI site update describes chocobos from a historical perspective in the fictional game universe, and doesn't describe how the system will actually work in serious detail. It talks about how chocobos have historically been used for farming, hunting, general labour and, most commonly, for transportation — but mentions how chocobo breeding has recently become a major phemomenon among common adventurers.
One update, however, does shed some light on the in-game system. It appears that chocobos are going to be classed into five distinct breeds.

Chocobo breeds in Final Fantasy XI (FFXI)
- Destrier — Originating in San d'Oria, this breed of Chocobos is usually fitted with heavy armor for use as cavalry. The birds themselves are jet black, and very strong.
- Courser — Large chocobos, ideal for Elvaan riders, the coursers are very graceful. In rare cases, they can grow red feathers.
- Palfrey — Raised mostly in Bastok and on Zepwell Island, the Palfrey breed was created to withstand desert conditions, and are usually blue or yellow.
- Jennet — The Jennet breed was created through the use of magic to create a Chocobo small enough for a Tarutaru. Some green variations of this breed were also created for Mithra who wanted a stealthy ride through the jungle.
- Rounsey —The mid-sized rounsey is the most common type of Chocobo, especially in Jeuno.
The chocobo breeding system comes into play this July, along with other updates to Besieged and a variety of mission/quest additions.
