EverQuest banned in Brazil

Brazil's second-ever video game ruling bans major MMORPG for encouraging evilness

January 21, 2008

A court ruling made in Brazil last year is now going into effect, banning two video games from that country. The effected games are he MMORPG EverQuest and the first-person shooter Counter-Strike. The games were deemed "harmful to consumers' health" by the judge, who ruled last October that the games were to be removed from the market.

EverQuest seems to have been banned because of the game's insistence that you complete both good and bad deeds to progress you character's development. Meanwhile, Counter-Strike's ban is attributed to a level in which drug dealers fight against the police — an issue deemed too sensitive and inappropriate for depiction in Brazil.

Video game censorship isn't commonplace in Brazil. This is only the second ruling that effectively bans any games from this country. Previously, only one other ruling of this sort has been made, which banned six games including Doom, Mortal Kombat and Postal in 1999.
