Funcom's upcoming MMORPG Age of Conan is shaping up to have one impressive launch, and may have oversold on preorders.

A press release from the company yesterday announced that 700,000 copies of the game were to be shipped at the launch. The release also warned that server limitations may be causing some pre-orders to be unfulfilled.

Funcom's VP of Marketing & Sales. Morten Larssen, comments:

"If the information we have is correct, they represent the highest pre-order number for any global launch of an original PC game, ever, including the original World of Warcraft launch."

In the midst of the struggle, Funcom locked users out of its forums for a time, as angry fans came in to go online. The company has reportedly expanded its server capacity, but some players are still having troubles accessing the game.

Age of Conan is the first game in quite some time with real potential of challenging MMO giant World of Warcraft.

More to follow on whether or not it continues that advance.
