Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light this October

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

Square Enix has released a new Final Fantasy title for the Nintendo DS. The company will release Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light this October in North America and Europe.

Originally released last October in Japan as The Four Warriors of Light: Final Fantasy Gaiden, the game boasts a mix of old and new gameplay styles, using the newer DS to present gameplay reminiscent of the early NES Final Fantasy games.  The game centers around a young boy who has been summoned by a king to rescue the king’s daughter from a sinister witch.  Not breathtaking originality, but I suppose that’s the point.

Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light will be out October 5 in North America, and October 8 in Europe.

Debut trailer for Two Worlds II

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

SouthPeak has released the debut trailer for its upcoming RPG, Two Worlds II.

Two Worlds II is being described as a massive improvement over the original Two Worlds game. The first one had the gameplay style of The Elder Scrolls, but also featured a number of bugs and was generally less impressive. I still enjoyed Two Worlds to begin with, if only for the fun of exploring a vast landscape. We’ll see what the sequel can bring to the table.

Two Worlds II is due out September 14 in North America, and September 17 in Europe.

Mass Effect movie in the works

Monday, May 24th, 2010

It seems that BioWare’s hit action-RPG franchise Mass Effect is on its way to the big screen.  Legendary Pictures, which has rights to produce the film, is getting everything together to put Commander Shepherd on the big screen.

Screenwriter Mark Protosevich, who wrote I Am Legend and the upcoming Thor movie, is currently in talks to write the movie.  The film will be co-produced by Legendary and Warner Bros.

Mass Effect isn’t alone, with other video games like World of Warcraft and Gears of War also making the attempt to transition into film. Meanwhile, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is on its way to theatres this Friday.

We’ll have to wait and see what this becomes, but Mass Effect certainly has the rich story and world mythology that could easily translate into film — if the right team is behind it.

Fable III on PC & Xbox 360 this holiday, Collector’s edition is 360-only

Friday, May 21st, 2010

Microsoft has confirmed that Fable III will arrive in time for the holidays, and that the game will be out on both the Xbox 360 and Windows PC platforms.

Windows players will enjoy a lower price, with the PC version coming in at $49.99 US while the Xbox 360 version will cost $59.99.

However, unique to the Xbox 360 is the Fable III Collector’s Edition set, which will sell for $79.99. The set features some impressive packaging, along with a “Guild Seal” coin (complete with good and evil sides for those tough moral choices), and a set of Fable III playing cards.

The physical goodies in the box are only the start of the Collector’s Edition bonuses — the downloadable content that comes along with it is the main selling point. An exclusive area and quest, along with a unique dog breed for your companion and an outfit for you. Microsoft has said that the DLC will also be available to Windows users, though presumably for more money.

A specific release date has yet to be announced, but Microsoft promises Fable III by the holiday season. In the US, the game is already available for pre-order from Amazon.

DLC will bridge Mass Effect 2 and 3

Friday, May 21st, 2010

Not much has happened in the world of Mass Effect 2 lately. DLC for the game has been fairly limited since the January release. According to BioWare, that will soon change.

Mass Effect 2 producer Casey Hudson promised VideoGamer.com that players will soon see a “continued stream” of downloadable content for the sci-fi RPG, beginning with “Overlord” this June.

After that, Hudson says “a bunch” of other packs are in the works. “We’ll start to have packs that’ll tell the story between Mass Effect 2 and 3. But beyond that we kind of have to see how people are responding to what we have and go from there.”

As for Mass Effect 3, work on the game is underway at BioWare, but they’re quick to say it’ll be a little while before we start hearing about it. In the meantime, we’ll have Mass Effect 2 DLC to keep us busy, and get us ready for what’s to come in the trilogy’s final installment.

Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep gets release date, impressive voice cast

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

Square Enix’s upcoming PSP game Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep has been given a release date for its English version. The game was released in Japan this January, and will be out in September in other areas. North America will get the game September 7, while Europe will be playing Birth By Sleep on September 10.

In addition, the voice cast for the English speaking parts has been announced, and contains some big names for a PSP game. Mark Hamill, Willa Holland, Jesse McCartney, James Woods and Leonard Nimoy have all signed on for roles in the title. Nimoy, who has recently announced his planned retirement from acting, will be giving one of his final performances for the game.

Square Enix says that this game is a prequel to the rest of the Kingdom Hearts series, and can stand out as a main Kingdom Hearts title rather than a small spin-off. The Kingdom Hearts games merge Square Enix RPG stories, and a few Final Fantasy characters, with Disney worlds. Birth By Sleep, specifically, will involve the worlds of Sleeping Beauty, Snow White and Lilo & Stitch.

The English version of the game not only includes new voice acting, but new features that have been added to the game’s multiplayer mode. Watch for it this September.
