Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within

The Spirits Within was a movie created by the short-lived Square Pictures in 2001. Square decided to capitalize on the Final Fantasy title with a major motion picture that was entirely computer-generated.

The result was Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, the most realistic full-length CG movie of its time. The moview received mixed reviews—some loved it, some hated it. Others thought it was a great film, but not deserving of the Final Fantasy name.

Either way, despite the impressive technology, The Spirits Within didn't meet Square's expectations, and the Square Pictures studio was closed. Square Enix has yet to be involved in another full-length film. The closest yet is the DVD-only movie Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children.
