Blue Magic

Unlike most other forms of magic, Blue Magic is not learned from scrolls. Instead, it's learned in the field from monsters who use it. Blue Magic is learned after a monster has been defeated, and only when the monster has used a learnable ability in the battle. You also can't learn blue magic if it exceeds your level, or if you would not gain experience points from the monster you're defeating.

Also unique to Blue Magic is the concept of "setting" magic using points. Blue Magic can't be used as soon as it is learned. Instead, it's necessary to choose specific blue magic abilities which will be available. (Understandable, since it might be too much — or too much power — for a Blue Mage to be able to use any ability at any time.) There's a maximum number of spells that you can have access to at any given time.

Blue Magic can only be learned by an adventurer who is playing with Blue Mage as their main job.

Setting Blue Magic

In order to set Blue Magic spells, you must first set them. Two numbers determine how many spells can be set, and which combinations of spells can be set. The first is the maximum number of spells you can set. The number of spells you can set at any given time raises as you level Blue Mage (BLU) and ranges from six to twenty.

In addition to a maximum number of spells that can be set, there's a maximum number of Blue Magic Points that can be used up by those spells. This number also varies based on level, ranging from ten to forty-five. Each Blue Magic spell uses a certain number of points, which then can't be used when setting other spells.

So, for example, at level 15, eight spells can be set using up to fifteen Blue Magic Points. However, if the first five spells that are set each cost three blue magic points (meaning that all 15 points have been used), no more spells can be set even though there are three empty slots. If four spells cost one point, and four cost two points, however, all slots can be filled and there are still unused points left over.

Once blue magic spells are set, they cannot be used for one minute.
