Jobs
Final Fantasy XI, like many Final Fantasy titles, uses a job system to give characters various abilities and attributes.
Your experience and levels are specific to your job, and only one job can be leveled up at a time: your main job. Even once you acquire a Support Job, it won't advance in level.
At the start of the game, only the standard jobs are available: the mages, Monk, Thief and Warrior. Once you reach level 30 with one of those jobs, however, you can begin quests to earn the extra jobs, which include Summoner, Samurai and Paladin. Each of these jobs has its own unique set of abilities, and each contributes to a party in its own way.

Support Job
Once you reach level 18, you can complete quests to obtain a support job. The support job is a back-up job to give you additional attributes and abilities that enhance your main job, or to give you abilities your main job lacks. For example, a Red Mage may choose to sub White Mage for the additional white magic spells and MP, or to sub Warrior for the additional melee attack power.
