Transportation
Getting around Vana'diel can be pretty tough on foot alone. It's a big place, and battles can slow you down considerably—or send you all the way back to your home point if you're not prepared. In order to facilitate travelling throughout Vana'diel, you have a few options.
Chocobos
Riding a Chocobo is much faster and safer than walking. You can rent a Chocobo once you reach level 20 and complete the necessary quest in Jeuno. The cost to rent a Chocobo is based on the demand in the area at the time of the rental. If you're looking to make a journey and save as much Gil as possible, you should try to plan your trip for off-hours.
Introduced in August 2006 was the ability to raise and mount your own Chocobo.
Ferry
The Ferries are cargo ships that travel by sea. There are three main ferries in Vana'diel: the Mhaura-Selbina Ferry, the Mhaura-Al Zahbi Ferry and the Al Zahbi-Nashmau Ferry.
Fishing can be done off the side of the boat, but those at lower levels may be at risk—pulling out a high-level monster could quickly ruin the trip. The ferry holds its own shop for fishing gear. Still, on the ferry low-level players might be safest below-deck in the cargo hold, as dangerous sea creatures, ghosts and undead pirates have been known to appear.
Airship
An airship ticket will run you about 200 gil, offering quick travel and protection from monsters. Airships are crystal-powered vessels that were invented by an engineer named Cid. You'll need an Airship pass to fly, though. Passes to the three major cities can be obtained by completing the missions in Jeuno.
Travel by Crag
Throughout Vana'diel are various Crag crystals. These magical crystals can transport players from around the world to their locations. Only White Mages from level 36 can make use of Transport spells that will let them travel to the Crags. See the White Mage Magic Chart for details.
Runic Portals
In the Empire of Aht Urhgan, there are five Runic Portals which connect to staging points - fortified areas throughout the eastern continent. These are controlled by the Empire and allow instant transit between areas.
To conserve power, when the Astral Canscendence is not in Aht Urhgan's control, the Empire does not issue permission to use the Runic Portals without Assault orders.
