Access to R & D Depot shop is obtained only when you complete Mission 7.

The Trapezohedron, which costs 2 million Gil, is required to upgrade many weapons to their final form. For instance, it is required to upgrade an Ultima Weapon (the second form of the Lionheart) to an Omega Weapon.
Trapezohedron are also available as rare drops from Adamantoise, Adamantortoise and Long Gui. You also have a chance of getting some by disassembling the Lance of Kain or Nirvana, though obtaining these items requires upgrading others with a Trapezohedron in the first place.
