The Last Remnant
In a world of constant struggle, the humanoid races seek to possess the Remnants, the sources of great power.
The Last Remnant is an RPG developed by Square Enix, and powered by the Unreal Engine 3. The game is being developed for the Sony PlayStatation 3 (PS3) and Microsoft Xbox 360.
The game's new battle system has been described by the game's director as a "turn-burst, command-based system using symbol encounters." The battle system will rely on quick time events, in which players must press specific buttons or button combos during attacks with precise timing to ensure the effectiveness of the attack. (This type of system is not unlike the limit breaks in some Final Fantasy titles, or the attack ring in Mistwalker's Lost Odyssey.)
Battles will take place on a larger scale than most of Square Enix's RPGs. Rather than a three- or four-man party fighting off a lineup of enemies, battles will involve up to 70 enemies at a time. Rather than a small party, the main character will be part of a "union" of more characters. The battle system will be more central to the gameplay than in most titles. Random encounters will not occur.
The Last Remnant was first announced on May 10, 2007, at a press conference. No release date has been announced.
