When humans discovered relics of an ancient alien civilization on Mars, human technological progress was launched ahead by centuries. This prothean technology, known to other intelligent species, is known as Mass Effect. By adapting this technology, Earth's alliance forces have become major players on the galactic scene. But now, an age of peace is being overturned as a race of artificial life forms have returned from beyond charted territory, attacking human colonies to recover Prothean technology. What do they have planned? It's up to Commander Shepard and his team to find out, before it's too late.
Mass Effect is a sci-fi RPG for the Xbox 360 and PC from BioWare, the creators of the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic series.
Like many of BioWare's previous RPGs, choice is a major theme in Mass Effect. Your choices in the game will shape the outcome of your character's life, and his actions will be echoed in the destiny of the galaxy.
To begin with this theme, Mass Effect gives you the option to fully-customize your character, including gender, appearance and backstory. Full dialogue voice acting has been recorded for each gender, and your chosen background and character type affect the available quests and in-game dialogue.
BioWare has also announced that it plans to extend the Mass Effect franchise into a trilogy. Mass Effect 2 is currently in development.
