Thor was the thunder god of Germanic mythology. He is the son of Odin, the chief god, and Fjorgyn, the goddess of earth. He carries a magic hammer, Mjollnir. Thor was the mightiest god and a protector against the frost giants. At Ragnarok, the doom of the gods, he was killed by the poisonous venom of the sea serpent Jormungand, after he had killed it.

When the Roman calander was adopted by the Anglo-Saxans they named the fifth day of the week "Thursday" after Thor. The name Thor means "Thunder".
